China iron ore producing area distribution introduction

The iron ore resources in China are featured in two specialties: one is that many are low-grade ores, the reserves of low-grade ore accounting for 80% of the total reserves; the other is that many complex ores in which multielement coexists .Besides, the ore body is complicated; with regards to some low-grade iron ore deposits, the upper is hematite while the bottom is magnetite.

1)Northeast China Iron Ore

The iron ore in Northeast China are mainly in Anshan orefield, it is the largest ore field in reserve and yield in present China. Large scale ore bodies are scattered in Anshan in Liaoning Province (includingDahushan, Yingtaoyuan, East and West Anshan, Gongchangling), Benxi (Lanfen, Waitoushan, Tongyuanbao and etc.), and some ore deposits near Tonghua. Anshan ore filed is the main raw material base for Ansteel and Ben’gang.

The characteristics of iron ore in Anshan orefiled: except for a small quantity of rich ore, nearly 98% of the reserves are low-grade ores with iron content 20% to 40%, the average iron content about 30%. The low-grade ores shall go through beneficiation and the iron content can reach over 60%.

2)The ores and minerals are mainly magnetite and hematite, partly martite and semi-martite. The structure is dense and solid, the gauge is well-distributed and dense, it is a little hard for beneficiation and the iron ore is poor in reducibility.

3)The ores of gangue are consisted by quartz stones with Sio2 at 40% to 50%. But the iron ore of Tongyuanbao Benxi is autolyzed ores, and the alkalinity (Ca+Mg/SiO2) exceeds 1. The content of Mn in the ores is 1.29% to 7.5% and it can substitute the manganese ore for use.

4)The ores contain little S, P impurities. Benxi Lanfen contains little P and is the good raw material for smelt qualified pig iron.

(2)The iron ores in North China are mainly scattered in such regions as villages in Xunhua, Qian’an, Handan, Wuan, Kuangshan of Xingtai in Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia and Shanxi. These are the raw material bases for Shougang, Baogang, Taigang and steel plants in Handan, Xuanhua and Yangquan.

The ores in Qianluan orefield are low-grade magnetite, with acid gangue and little S, P impurities, and good washability.

The ores in Hanxing orefield are mainly hematite and magnetite, the iron content of ores are between 40% and 55%, the gangue contains some basic oxide and some ores contain high quantity of S.

(3)The iron ores in Central South China are mainly in Daye, Hubei, other regions such as Xiangtan in Hunan Province, Anyang ,Wuyang in He’nan, Guangdong Province and Hainan Island have large scale ore reserves, which becomes the raw material bases for Wugang, Xianggang and local medium and large scale blast furnaces.

Daye orefield is one the earliest mining orefields in China, and contains such mines as Tieshan, Jishandian, Chengcao and Lingxiang, which are rich in reserves. The ores are mainly Fe and Cu paragenetic minerals. The iron ores area mainly magnetite, followed by hematite and little chalcopyrite and iron pyrite. The iron content of ores is between 40 to 50%, some as high as 54% to 60%. The minerals of gangue are calcite and quartz. The gangue contains some 28% SiO2 and is featured in low solvent resistance (CaO/SiO2 0.3) and low P content (generally 0.027%), but the S content in gangue varies a lot (0.01% to 1.2%), the gangue also contains Cu, Co and other non-ferrous metals. The ores are poor in reducibility and have gone through sintering, palletizing and then be put into blast furnace for smelting.

(4)The iron ore producing areas in East China are such mines as Aoshan, Nanshan, Gushan, Taochong, Meishan and Fenghuangshan along Wuhu in Anhui to Nanjing in Jiangsu. Besides, there are also rich iron ore resource reserves in Jinling Town and other places in Shandong, which become the raw material bases for Maanshan Iron and Steel Company and other steel enterprises.

Iron ores in Wuning orefield are mainly hematite, followed by magnetite and little chalcopyrite and iron pyrite. The grade of iron ore is high, and some rich ore (with iron content 50% to 60%) can be put into blast furnaces for smelting directly, some poor ores have gone through beneficiation and sintering before being put into the blast furnaces. The ores are good in reducibility. The minerals of gangue are quartz, calcite, apatite and rutile. The ores contain high S, P impurities (generally P 0.5 %, some even reach 1.6%, the S in Meishan iron ore can reach 2% to 3%), the ores are featured in certain solvent resistance (the average alkalinity of rich ore in Aoshan and Meishan can reach 0.7 to 0.9), some ores contain V, Ti and Cu and other ferrous metals.

(5)Iron ores in other regions  Besides the above mentioned iron ores in different regions, there are also different kinds of rich iron ores in such provinces as Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Gansu, Xinjiang, Ningxia in Southwest and Northwest China. These iron ores provide raw materials for blast furnaces of Pan’gang, Chonggang and Kungang and other medium and large scale steel plants��
